Triple bottom line banks are very different than your typical banks. Triple bottom line means the bank takes into account economic, environmental, and social impacts of the its decisions. The bank is not solely driven by turning a profit, but also taking into account how the bank can make a better impact of the world.

Community Development Banks and Credit Unions

These banks and credit unions are certified as Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs). This means these financial institutions are committed to promoting community development. These institutions seek to generate economic development in low to moderate income areas while also serving the residents that region. They are a good way to bank AND invest in your community. CDFI certification also means that at least 60% of activities must benefit low income communities.

Community development credit unions are certified as Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs). These credit unions allocate at least 60% of its activities to benefiting low and moderate income communities. However, unlike banks, these banking institutions are run as non-profits which are collectively-owned and democratically-governed by its members.
